Math Resources for Paraeducators

Here are some great resources for paraprofessionals working to help students with math:

The Pennsylvania Department of Education created a very nice Powerpoint presentation on types of errors students make with math. There is also a pdf with math vocabulary a parapro might want to know to teach elementary math, as well as math strategies. Two documents are available related to this session: a Power Point Presentation and the associated handout packet. This is a PowerPoint for this training presenting information on various mathematical strategies related to fact errors, component skill errors, and strategy errors. It utilizes student work samples, consisting of computation and application problems, and includes activities on error analysis of student work and classifying types of errors to determine the student’s areas of need. Information on adapting materials to meet student needs is also included. This is FREE.   Pros: These materials provide some great ideas about types of errors and why special education teachers look at them. Con: These materials were part of a training session so they may not be simple to understand.  Feel free to see me for more information.

Math Playground is a popular learning site filled with math games, logic puzzles and a variety of  problem solving activities. A favorite of parents and teachers, Math Playground provides a safe place for children to learn and explore math concepts at their own pace. This is a great, FREE website for you to use with students who finish their work early and needs some extra skills work.  Pro: This is free and you can direct students to the specific games which match their learning goals.  Cons: This would be noisy so be sure to have headphones for each student.
