Title: Using the
unifix cubes to solve single digit multiplication problems
Grade: 3rd
Materials: Box of unifix cubes, math
worksheet for the day, pencils
Time: 10-10:30
Students: Joy and Matt
from room 25, Cecilia from room 24
Short Term
Learning Targets/Objective for This Lesson:
Given five single digit by single digit multiplication
problems, students will correctly use the unifix cube train strategy to solve all five.
PLAN:
Time

Teacher & Student Tasks
1.
Activate
knowledge- Ask students to "show me how to use unifix cubes to solve 5X3 "
2.
Demonstrate
the correct way to use unifix cubes and the 100s chart to solve
multiplication problems.
3.
Strategy
steps: see below
4.
As a
group, find 5X2 and 3X5 and 4X3. Do these together and check for understanding.
5.
Pass out
a worksheet for practice solving math problems using the multiplication
table.
6.
Put a
star next to each problem they get correct.
|
Rationale
1.
This
will be a great way to get their brains working right away and have them at
least show you what they’ve learned previously using the multiplication
table.
2.
They
should feel good about trying.

|
Closure
Have students complete their worksheet and turn it in when
finished and quietly return to their classroom.
|
Strategy Steps
1. First number is how many cubes in each train
2. Second number is how many trains to build
3. Write the equation two ways (addition and multiplication)
4. Check your answer
